Seattle residents can compost trees and greens free of charge between December 26, 2011 and January 9, 2012.

At Recycling & Disposal Stations

Trees should not exceed eight feet in length and must be free of decoration so they can be turned into compost for local parks and gardens. Trunks should not exceed four inches in diameter. The stations will accept up to three trees per vehicle for free. Find station locations and hours here.

At the Curb

Food and yard waste subscribers can put trees and greens out on their regular collection day. Cut trees into sections, six feet long or shorter, with branches trimmed to less than four feet to fit into the collection trucks. Bundle each section with sisal string or twine (not plastic). Decorated, flocked and plastic trees are not recyclable, and will be charged as extra garbage.

At Apartments

Multi-family buildings can put out one tree next to each food and yard waste cart at no extra charge each collection day.

Could we reach that goal by 2022 instead?

Now’s your chance to let Seattle Public Utilities know what you think of the draft update to the Solid Waste Management Plan. The Plan, last updated in 2004, will guide the City of Seattle’s programs and services over the next 20 years to prevent waste, increase recycling and composting, and improve services.

Visit SPU’s Solid Waste Management Plan page and take a quick survey or send an email to provide your comments and feedback.

17,500 tons of unwanted paper—100 pounds per household—delivered each year!

The City of Seattle now offers a free and simple online registry system that will allow Seattle residents and businesses to choose whether they receive yellow pages phone books. But you need to act fast if you want to opt out. Your opt out selection must be in effect 30 days before a company starts its Seattle distribution cycle. Choices for DEX yellow pages phone books must be made by May 16, 2011 in order to prevent delivery of books this year.

Two million yellow pages phone books are recycled in Seattle every year at a cost of approximately $350,000 to Seattle Public Utilities ratepayers. While its important to recycle phone books, it’s much better for the environment to reduce their production altogether.
