School meals are a crucial food access point in our communities, with Seattle Public Schools serving as many as 20,000 meals per day to students. School-based food and garden education are key strategies to connect students with where their food comes from and support student health and learning.
To help guide work on those issues, City of Seattle’s Office of Sustainability & Environment, Seattle Public Schools Culinary Services, and community organizations convened the Seattle School Meals & Food Education Working Group (Working Group) in 2022.
The Working Group has identified three strategic actions, aligned with the priorities of youth leadership, that would build on current work and support new efforts to help increase access to high-quality school meals, food and garden education for Seattle students. Read more about recent progress with that work at SPS, and the Working Group’s three Priority Action recommendations to support those efforts, in their 2022-23 report available here.
Join a webinar on July 22nd with Working Group participants and supporters to hear more about the group and the Priority Action recommendations. The webinar will also include time for attendees to discuss and reflect on the actions with the Working Group, and opportunities for attendees to support or get involved.
