A bustling Sunday at the Ballard Farmers Market! National Farmers Market Week is just around the corner! From August 3 through 9, we’re joining communities across the country to highlight the importance of farmers markets and the local farmers who make them thrive.
Fresh Bucks is the City’s healthy food program helping Seattle households afford produce, operated by our team at OSE. Enrolled households receive $40 per month to spend on fresh fruits and vegetables at 45 participating retailers, including farmers markets. We’ve partnered with farmers markets for more than 10 years because they are more than just places to buy fresh produce — markets are gathering spots, economic engines, and essential to building a resilient and equitable local food system.
Even though Fresh “Bucks” don’t look like cash, they directly support small businesses, vendors, and farmers at neighborhood markets. Farmers markets partnered with Fresh Bucks are able to reach households that might not have been shopping at farmers markets before while collecting the same amount as they do from cash purchases to sustain their small businesses.
We partner with local farmers and vendors with environmentally friendly practices to help reduce climate change impacts, which interrupt and raise the cost of farming and other food production. Supporting local businesses helps build a more resilient local food system that can withstand disruptions that affect larger food supply chains, like price increases from food shortages during the coronavirus pandemic. Learn more about food security and climate action in Seattle’s Food Action Plan.
During the summer, Fresh Bucks customers can shop at a farmers market any day of the week! Some markets are open year-round.
