Fresh Bucks Program Adds Two New Retailers in South Seattle

Two murals at the new Fresh Bucks retailers: A mural outside of La Esperanza Mercado inspired by Mexican culture, and Skyway’s new “Queen for the Day” mural by Dare2Be Queen Cohort.

Seattle’s Office of Sustainability and Environment (OSE) is excited to welcome La Esperanza Mercado y Carniceria in Beacon Hill and the Skyway Farmers Market to our Fresh Bucks network! Fresh Bucks is Seattle’s healthy food program that helps neighbors afford fruits and vegetables.

Many Fresh Bucks customers live in South Seattle, a region with disproportionately less access to affordable fresh foods due to economic inequalities, transportation barriers, and limited grocery options. Our Fresh Bucks team has been working to partner with more South Seattle grocers to ensure community members can get fresh, culturally relevant produce options closer to home every month and support local businesses.

We’re thrilled to have these two new food markets join Fresh Bucks!

Boxes and baskets of fresh fruits and vegetables sit around several tables and shoppers walking by. The word “free” is spelled out in carrots on the pavement.
Fresh produce and many free healthy food offerings at Skyway Farmers Market.

La Esperanza Mercado y Carniceria

Quick and easy to access, La Esperanza is near the Beacon Hill light rail station and community organization El Centro de la Raza. The store offers fresh, high-quality produce central to Latino cuisine and a welcoming, neighborhood-focused atmosphere.

La Esperanza has served both Spanish- and English-speaking customers for more than a decade. The store is open daily from 9am to 9pm and located at 2500 Beacon Ave S.

Skyway Farmers Market

An outdoor, seasonal market located in the heart of the Skyway community. It’s a great spot to shop for produce while supporting local Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) farmers and community programs increasing food justice through sharing knowledge, celebrating cultures, and more.

The market aims to promote economic activity in the community by giving local vendors a space to grow their businesses. The market is hosted on the last Sunday of each month from spring to fall and located at 11904 Renton Ave S.

An outdoor market is set up in a busy street. There are two lines of white tents with many shoppers checking out the market.
Fresh Bucks can be used at participating Seattle farmers’ markets, independent grocers, and supermarkets across Seattle.

Fresh Bucks has taken off since it first started in 2012, now accepted at more than 40 businesses, prioritizing our most overburdened neighborhoods. These partnerships not only improve food access — they strengthen our local food economy and support small businesses.

How Fresh Bucks works: Enrolled participants receive $40 in their Fresh Bucks account each month. Customers can spend their benefits on fruits and vegetables using their Fresh Bucks Card or mobile app at any listed retail partner locations. Learn more at SeattleFreshBucks.org.

Earlier this year, Fresh Bucks launched a waitlist application, open for the foreseeable future. Spots will be offered as they become available. Fresh Bucks uses a random selection process to enroll eligible applicants off the waitlist.

We’ll see you at La Esperanza and Skyway Market!
